One in 15 Americans suffer from asthma, resulting in wheezing breath sounds, coughing and a lack of air getting into the lungs.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the body’s airways, and it may be mild, severe or even fatal.

When airways come in contact with an asthma trigger, these breathing passages become inflamed, narrow and filled with mucus. The underlying cause of asthma is unknown, but part of it is explained by genetics, as asthma often runs in families.

There is a lot known, however, about what triggers asthma attacks.
