Moldfacts note: This is a fairly accurate piece, for mainstream news, with one exception. Bleach or vinegar solutions may kill mold on non-porous surfaces such as tile, but on porous surfaces such as concrete, wood or sheetrock it will only make it worse. Dead mold can be more dangerous than live mold. It's best to consult a qualified remediation specialist when in doubt.
NEW YORK (CBS) ― With the heavy rains, even the most well-insulated homes have managed to spring a few leaks, especially in the basement. With household moisture comes mold, and health problems can quickly follow. It's best to make sure you're on alert, for the invisible but potent spores.
"When we suddenly have dampness and wet basements and the water is accumulating and sopping into papers and cardboard and clothing the mold starts growing there and after a couple of days everybody knows it because it smells bad," said Dr. Ira Finegold of St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital.
