The lingering pine or lemon smell after cleaning your house can be dangerous to your health.

Having a clean house shouldn't mean being exposed to toxic chemicals, but many common household cleaners are toxic. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average home contains 25 pounds of toxic cleaning products.

So what's a person to do to keep a house clean?

There are eco-friendly cleaning options that are better for your health and work just as well as conventional cleaners. An added bonus is the money you can save if you make it yourself.

"A lot of mainstream cleaners are highly toxic. There have been studies that link some ingredients to different conditions, and some ingredients are hormone disrupters," said Nina DeSanto, founder of Holistic Moms Network Poconos Chapter. "Eco-friendly cleaners are more economical. One 32-ounce bottle lasts a few weeks to a few months."

Harsh chemicals are not needed to clean a house, as many once believed. Many common store-bought cleaners contain corrosive harsh acids, phosphate-containing detergents, volatile gases, ammonia, formaldehyde and fragrances. These ingredients are not necessary to disinfect and are toxic to humans and pets alike.
