When Butte County Treasurer's office staff came down with headaches and skin problems, Treasurer Deb Lensegrav brought it to county commissioners - and mold was found in the vault of the century-old courthouse.
Plans are under way to clean up the vault and volume after volume of old county records.
Gary Chalk of Horsley Specialties in Rapid City and Ann Sandberg of Air Quality Assessments in Belle Fourche discussed the problem with commissioners Wednesday.
Commissioners told Chalk that most of the material stored in the vault is so old it hasn't been viewed in years - so decontamination of everything isn't necessary.
They asked the firm to come up with a cost estimate that would reflect decontaminating materials frequently used by the treasurer's office - and sealing away old books so they could be kept for historical reference, but need not be cleaned up for regular use.
