CHICAGO (CBS) - It seems impossible: a common household appliance causing $30,000 worth of damage to your kitchen. But that's just the nightmare one homeowner had when her refrigerator went on the fritz. CBS 2 Investigator Pam Zekman reports.
The first hint of the problem was when Laura Eckberg went to get food out of her refrigerator. She heard a noise under her feet.
"I noticed the tiles were making a popping sound," she said.
A contractor told Eckberg her warped floor was caused by moisture leaking from her GE Monogram refrigerator.
The problem with the popular built-in refrigerators, like Eckberg's, is that they are bolted to the wall, and they can't be easily pulled out of the cabinet to see if there's trouble going on behind them.
