The City of Poughkeepsie will use nearly $100,000 in federal funds to rid the Hooker Avenue firehouse of mold that officials fear could spread to firefighters' sleeping quarters.
"The conditions at the firehouse are deplorable," said Councilman Paul Herman, R-8th Ward, who helped bring the problem to the attention of city staff after he toured the facility.
The funds also would pay for construction of privacy walls in the sleeping quarters and removal of lead paint, officials said. Eleven people work at the firehouse, which officials said dates to 1929.
Deputy Fire Chief Ed Decker said the mold poses no immediate health threat, but, he added, the problem needs to be addressed before it does. Officials believe a leaky roof led to the mold problem, which Decker said first popped up about six months ago.
