Officials at Joe Wheeler State Park discovered a problem at the lodge and hotel back in December. Black mold growing was behind the wallpaper in some of its guest rooms. It was an issue serious enough to shut down 26 of the park's 75 rooms.

"We felt to err on the side of caution -- close the rooms and don't let anyone stay in them until we get the mold removed", said Terry Boyd, chief engineer for the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. He says the park contacted Montgomery officials as soon as the mold problem became apparent.

Joe Wheeler State Park Lodge and Hotel manager Tim Haney says that no one forced the state park to close the rooms.

"We actually voluntarily closed the rooms and said we need to address this. This could affect someone's health", said Haney.
