WALDEN — Lindsay Hammer's furniture is piled high into her kitchen. Her sofa is crammed against the living-room wall. Her television sits upside down on top of it.
The living room floor is bare concrete. Her shop vacuum is on standby, ready for when the rain comes in.
Hammer hasn't lived in her house since Hurricane Irene hit. The Middletown High School math teacher stays with family because the neighboring townhome leaks water into her living space.
Hammer's nightmare began long before the storm. She says neither the village nor county officials have moved quickly to help her.
