The Paterson Department of Health Services is investigating a tenant's allegations of severe mold growth in a Haledon apartment building.

Dean Mitchell said he believed the walls on 2 Church St. had mold growth as a result of water that was used to extinguish a fire that occurred on the third floor in May.

Mitchell rents the first floor of the building for his business, 5th On The Park Florist. The first floor is a former butcher shop with metal walls, Mitchell said, with sheetrock underneath.

Mold typically grows in cool, dark places with plenty of moisture and can cause severe allergic reactions.

There are four apartments and two commercial spaces in the building, but only three of the dwelling spaces are occupied. The fourth is still unoccupied as a result of the fire in May.

Mitchell said his health has deteriorated since the summer, suggesting the alleged mold growth as a possible reason.

"Once I get to the store, I start coughing endlessly," Mitchell said.

Mitchell acknowledged that his health concerns would have remained out of the public eye if not for e-mails he sent to the borough, the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, the Environmental Protection Agency as well as several media outlets on Dec. 21.
