Given the right conditions, mold can grow anywhere.

That’s the opinion of Tom Harp, building commissioner for the city of Peru.

The Cowan family home was demolished and had to be rebuilt due to excessive mold, which was causing health problems for the family, according to family members. The mold could not be removed from the current structure, so "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" officials deemed rebuilding the home would be the best way to help the family.

Harp was not very familiar with the project, but he’s seen plenty of mold in area homes. Officials at Hallmark Homes who are aware of the extent of the mold damage were unavailable for comment due to the rapid rate at which the new home is being built.

"Mold is everywhere," Harp said. "If you get the right temperatures, lighting conditions and moisture content, mold will grow. Some is more hazardous to humans than others."

Mold also can grow because of improper venting and improper installation of vapor barriers, Harp said. Building codes and procedures have changed since the 1970s to help control moisture migration, but he said the old way of doing things sometimes is better.
