Belleville High School had a mold problem, district Business Administrator Edward Appleton confirmed to the Times.

The Board of Education refused comment on the issue during its Sept. 27 meeting, when former Board of Education member Carmen Bucco broached the topic.

Sometime in mid-August, Appelton said, school officials discovered mold in BHS' Special Services Department.

"There was mold present in various areas of the walls themselves," he said.

The board called in a consulting firm, which brought in a cleaning firm.

Mold-affected pieces of sheet-rock were cut out of the walls, moldy ceiling tiles were replaced, and special cleaning solutions were applied to correct the problem, according to Appleton.
