Repairs at Oak Ridge Elementary School have cost $450,000 to date – not counting the cost of relocating the school's students and a planned recommissioning of its heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) system – members of the Guilford County Board of Education heard at their meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
Guilford County Schools Chief Operations Officer Leo Bobadilla told school board members that most remediation work has been done at the school, at which students and teachers have reported a variety of health problems since the school was completely rebuilt in 2005.
Bobadilla said the Guilford County Schools Facilities Department, under the supervision of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), a part of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Turner Group, an environmental construction firm hired by the school system on the recommendation of NIOSH, have repaired sheetrock, removed carpeting, installed vinyl tile, removed old ceiling tiles above the school's drop ceiling, and done extensive work on the crawlspace beneath the school, in which NIOSH found mold when it inspected the school in July.
