EAST STROUDSBURG — Today's swine flu vaccination clinic at J.T. Lambert Intermediate School will take place despite a burst pipe that closed the school for the whole week.
The breached pipe drenched classrooms on the first and second floors of the sixth- through eighth-grade building, and tripped the fire alarm early Sunday morning.
But the water did not touch the gymnasium, which will host the district's H1N1 vaccination clinic today, from 4 to 8 p.m., and Saturday morning.
Students, however, will have the remainder of the week off as cleaning crews scrub and disinfect the floors and walls to fix any water damage.
"It's in everyone's best interests to take out the cabinets and go the extra mile," Scott Benner, large loss manager for Servpro of Easton, Bethlehem and Whitehall, said at a board meeting Monday night.
He said his company, which restores spaces after they have sustained major property damage, would clear out any water it could find and treat the area to staunch any mold.
"We will take care of whatever we find from this loss," Benner said.
A 4-inch plastic pipe in the ceiling near a closet burst where it intersected with a valve. The pipe, which can transmit 80 gallons per minute, breached because of a sudden change in pressure, said James Shearouse, director of maintenance for the district.
There is no known cause for the pipe's bursting. "This is probably something that'll never happen again," Shearouse said.
